The Australian government deployed the army against 20,000 emus destroying crops in Western Australia. Major G.P.W. Meredith led the charge with Lewis machine guns... and the emus used guerrilla tactics, split into small groups, and outmaneuvered the military.

After thousands of rounds fired, only a handful of emus were taken down. Meredith later compared them to Zulu warriors for their courage.

The emus still live there. The army has never been sent back.
