Open Source Alone Won't Make Europe Digitally Sovereign

Open source alone will not make Europe digitally sovereign. An open licence is not the same as open control. That is my take. Your phone, your laptop, your email and your login all depend on American services. I think that dependency is a risk, and Europe needs to build its own answer. The obvious answer is open source. I do not think it is a solution on its own. Some of it is not a product, and an open licence does not tell you who decides what goes in. You can build on open source, as long as it is real open source. You cannot just use it and call that sovereignty. Copying Silicon Valley is not the answer either. Give it away free, lock people in with features they do not really need but still want, then squeeze. I would rather see products built for users, with business models people pay for because they want the software, not because they are stuck in it. What I think we need is products people can leave. When a product goes bad, people should be able to take everything with them, including their followers. Protocols like Mastodon and ActivityPub already show that this can be done, even if it is mostly geeks for now. Identity and payments that are not tied to one business would be the next layer. Regulation can force interoperability. It will take time, and we have to start now. Something better, and something European. This channel is my opinion, based on what I have actually seen in more than twenty-five years in software. Filmed on a riverbank. I would rather be corrected than agreed with. That is my take. Music: StreamBeats by Harris Heller
