<description>How much of an Android app can you bring to a phone that runs neither Android nor iOS? At the KTUG Munich November meetup at JetBrains Munich, Juhani Lehtimäki from Snapp Technology shows three Kotlin Multiplatform apps that now run natively on Sailfish OS, a Linux-based mobile OS made by Jolla in Finland: Nextcloud Talk, Indoor Bike and Companion for UNA. In this talk: • What Sailfish OS is, and what a native Sailfish app looks like • How much carried over: 66–84% of the Kotlin is shared, about half of each app overall • What we wrote ourselves: the UI in QML, Bluetooth, packaging • One port, from first commit to a release, in about 18 hours • Pitfalls: libraries with no Linux version, Bluetooth that hangs up too fast, failures that make no noise • Q&amp;A Slides: https://juhani.dev/talks/ Links Nextcloud Talk for Sailfish (open source): https://codefloe.com/SnappTechnology/NextCloudTalkNext Indoor Bike (open source): https://indoorbike.app Harpoon, app distribution for Sailfish OS: https://github.com/JuhaniLehtimaeki/Harpoon Sailfish MCP, our agent tool for testing on a real phone (release coming soon): https://codefloe.com/SnappTechnology/SailfishOSMCP All our Sailfish apps and releases: https://codefloe.com/SnappTechnology Juhani: https://juhani.dev Deeper dives by Jasper The little known mobile OS from Europe | Origin Story: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMKwCoX4XkA Exploring Sailfish OS Architecture: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tVYh78OYueM Chapters 0:00 Intro 2:24 What Sailfish OS is 3:48 What a Sailfish app is 4:49 Three apps we brought over 5:25 What you need to develop 5:56 The recipe 6:30 How much code is reused 7:37 Nextcloud Talk 8:01 Indoor Bike 8:42 Companion for UNA 9:28 18 hours to a release 10:05 The tools we use 11:10 Pitfalls 13:32 Takeaways 15:06 Q&amp;A Thanks to KTUG Munich for having us, and to JetBrains for hosting the meetup.
