Nato il 29 dicembre 1828 a Berlino, Kray è stato un orafo fino al 1848. Successivamente ha studiato alla Royal Prussian Academy of Arts di Berlino con Julius Schrader, Wilhelm Schirmer e Hermann Stilke. Tra il 1856 e il 1872 ha partecipato alle mostre dell’Accademia di Berlino. Dal 1859 al 1860 lo ritroviamo a Parigi ove frequentò lo studio di Alexandre Cabanel e Paul Baudry. Quindi tornò a Berlino dove lavorò principalmente come ritrattista.
