<description>Sixty-four percent. That's how many hospital patients on high-dose steroids hit a blood sugar of 200 or higher in a University of Pittsburgh study. Prednisone is a stronger, man-made version of cortisol, your own stress hormone. One of cortisol's jobs is telling your liver to push sugar into your blood. More than half of the patients with no history of diabetes hit 200 too. If you're already insulin resistant, that spike can hit harder and last longer. I know high sugar. My A1c was 12.2 before I reversed my type 2 diabetes. If your doctor has you on a steroid, keep taking it as prescribed and talk to them about watching your glucose. A CGM makes that easy. Then tilt the odds back your way: Walk ten minutes after every meal. Eat your protein and veggies first and skip the bread, sweets and juice. Go to bed at the same time every night in a dark, cool room. Take five quiet minutes a day to breathe.
